Dressing Feminine in the Business World

As a woman who worked in Corporate America for over 15 years, I cannot tell you how many times, during my goings and comings, that I’ve seen an inappropriately dressed young lady/woman.  I will tell you though, instead of turning my nose up toward them, I chalked it up to the fact that they were never taught how to appropriately dress in the business world.  This is just one of the MANY ways that we, who have the knowledge do not adequately educate our other sisters who many not (but I’ll save that for another post!)  So, this is the main reason this article caught my attention.  I really appreciate the fact that this information is published, with hopes of helping other young ladies/women who may not know how to present themselves in the business world.

When picking appropriate pieces to wear when doing business, there are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Skirt length (should not be short enough to become borderline distateful)
  • Neckline (too much cleavage can be too suggestive and cause others not to take your seriously)
  • Tatoos and piercings (I’ve always found that women should try their best to cover large tatoos and keep piercings to a minimum as to keep a more polished appearance in the workplace.)
  • Makeup (I’ve always advised young ladies to save their bolder colored/heavier makeup for their own time.  Less is always better when considering business appropriate makeup.  Color choices are everything!)

Excerpt from http://www.womenworking.com/feminine-dressing-man’s-world:

“May I let you in on the fundamentals of executive dressing? This post is about successfully achieving a balance that is both feminine and professional enough to gain respect from the door.

One style statement that is pretty tricky is feminine dressing. How does that translate in an environment primarily dominated by men? Can you or would you feel like you can be taken seriously if you are in soft florals or daytime lace while running a boardroom meeting or giving a presentation to higher ups? ABSOLUTELY!”
